The Positive Effects of the Sun
Sunlight is important for our health and well-being. It affects the body in several ways:
- Mood:Sunlight promotes the release of serotonin—many people feel more alert, balanced, and active
- Sleep Cycle:Daylight stabilizes the body's internal clock and promotes healthy sleep
- Vitamin D:The skin produces vitamin D when exposed to UVB radiation, which is important for bones, muscles, and the immune system
- Physical Activity and Development (in Children):Time spent outdoors promotes physical activity, motor development, and overall health
That’s why the sun is especially beneficial for children. The key is to be mindful—not to avoid it, but to enjoy it safely.

Sun Protection in Everyday Life
UV radiation isn't just a concern in the height of summer or at the beach. Even in everyday life—while taking a walk, in the garden, or at the playground—exposure adds up over time.
Over the long term, UV radiation can:
- cause the skin to age prematurely
- increase the risk of skin cancer
Important to know: It’s not just individual sunburns that are problematic, but above allthe cumulative damage caused by regular exposure over the years.
What helps:
- Take advantage of the shade, especially around noon
- Clothing for protection(hat, sunglasses, lightweight clothing)
- Use Sunscreen Strategically
- SPF 30 or higher
- Apply generously
- Reapply sunscreen regularly

Sun Protection for Children
Children's skin is more sensitive than that of adults and reacts more strongly to UV radiation. A large portion of the skin damage that occurs later in life begins during childhood.
For babies, the rule is:Avoid direct sunlight as much as possible.
For children overall:
- Shade and clothing are the most important forms of protection
- Sunscreen complements this protection—especially for exposed skin

Which sunscreen is best?
There are basically two types of UV filters:
Mineral (physical) filters
- reflect UV radiation
- take effect immediately
- often well-tolerated by children with sensitive skin
- may leave a white film
Chemical Filters
- absorb UV radiation and convert it
- are usually easier to distribute
- Individual ingredients are being discussed (e.g., possible hormonal effects), but the available data is inconclusive
For children—especially those with sensitive skin—mineral-based products are oftenthe preferred choice.
But above all, it’s important to remember:
Sunscreen that’s used regularly is more important than choosing the “perfect” product.

Our Medical Perspective
Sunlight is important and healthy—in moderation.
The goal is not to avoid the sun, but to provideconsistent protection suitable for everyday use that allows people—children and adults alike—to enjoy time outdoors without worry.
