MOTHER-CHILD HEALTH PASSPORT EXAMINATIONS

Support Throughout the First Years of Life
The birth of a child brings great joy—and many new questions. In the first weeks and months, parents often find themselves torn between happiness, uncertainty, and the desire to do everything “right.” The Mother-Child Health Record is designed to provide guidance during this sensitive time and ensure that your child develops healthily.

At the Wilhelminenberg Medical Center, we support families from the very beginning with a calm and experienced approach, and we’re always here to listen to all the questions that arise, especially in the early stages.

The Mother-Child Health Record checkups are mandatory preventive medical examinations that monitor the healthy development of children from birth through school age. They are designed to identify potential abnormalities early on and to reassure parents about their child’s growth, development, and health.

Depending on your child's age, the examinations may include, among other things:

  • physical examination
  • Monitoring Growth and Weight
  • Assessment of Motor and Age-Appropriate Development
  • Assessment of sensory functions (e.g., vision, hearing)
  • Observation of Behavior, Interaction, and Developmental Milestones

In addition, there’s always time for questions on topics such as sleep, breastfeeding, nutrition, development, restlessness, or everyday concerns.

Especially with your first child, many questions arise—and not everything can be captured in charts or standard values. It’s important to us not just to “check off” developmental milestones, but to make sense of them together.

We take our time:

  • for worries that may be hard to put into words
  • for insecurities that others might downplay
  • to help you reconcile medical recommendations with your family situation

In addition to the formal administration of the Mother-Child Health Record examinations, we place importance on:

  • a quiet, child-friendly atmosphere
  • Easy-to-understand explanations without any medical pressure
  • respectful treatment of different parenting approaches
  • A realistic assessment instead of unnecessary uncertainty

The goal is to empower parents—not to make them feel insecure.

  • for new parents
  • for families with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers
  • For parents who, in addition to medical monitoring, also want guidance and context

Junior Health Checkup

Comprehensive Health Checkup
for Children and Adolescents

The Junior Health Check is designed for children and adolescents whose parents want a comprehensive medical evaluation —beyond acute symptoms and independent of mandatory preventive health screenings.

The focus is on a holistic view of health, development, and resilience, tailored to age, life circumstances, and individual concerns.

Parents often choose the Junior Health Check when

  • they would like a second medical opinion
  • There are concerns regarding physical or psychosocial development
  • Children who are frequently ill or have recurring symptoms
  • There are stressors in the family, school, or social environment
  • a transition is coming up (e.g., starting school, changing schools, puberty)

Even for children who seem “unremarkable,” a structured assessment can help provide reassurance and accurately assess their development.

The Junior Health Checkup is conducted by our pediatrician and includes—depending on the child’s age and specific concerns—the following, among other things:

  • In-depth discussion with the child/adolescent and parents
  • physical examination
  • Assessment of Growth, Development, and Resilience
  • Discussion of sleep, nutrition, exercise, and daily life
  • Classification of Psychosomatic Symptoms or Stress Reactions

If necessary, additional diagnostic or therapeutic steps will be recommended or coordinated.

These symptoms may be a sign of a chronically activated stress and alarm system. Persistent worries, feeling overwhelmed, or inner tension keep the nervous system in a constant state of activation—even without consciously experiencing anxiety.

The Junior Health Check is not a standardized examination; rather, it is tailored to the family’s specific concerns. The goal is to,

  • Putting developments into context in an understandable way
  • To highlight resources and potential stressors
  • Identifying the need for support early on
  • Empowering parents in their assessments

We take the time to answer questions, explain concepts, and prioritize a calm, child-friendly atmosphere.

  • Preschool- and school-age children
  • Adolescents in Transitional Phases
  • Families with greater information or safety needs
  • Parents who want to do more than just “examine” their child—they want to understand them

Vaccinations and Blood Draws

Child-friendly, straightforward, and local

At the Wilhelminenberg Medical Center, we administer vaccinations and draw blood right in the office —without having to make an extra trip to a lab—and we take special care to ensure a calm, sensitive experience, even for anxious children.

We administer vaccinations in accordance with the Austrian vaccination schedule, which distinguishes between required, recommended, and optional vaccinations.

The necessary and recommended vaccinations include, among others, vaccinations against:

  • Diphtheria
  • Tetanus
  • Whooping Cough (Pertussis)
  • Poliomyelitis (Polio)
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella
  • Hepatitis B
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)
  • Pneumococci
  • Meningococci
  • Rotaviruses
  • Human Papillomaviruses (HPV)

In addition, there are other vaccinations that may be advisable depending on an individual’s specific situation, such as certain pre-existing conditions, family history, or particular life circumstances.

Standard vaccinations are generally in stock and can be administered without any special preparation.

We offer personalized consultations for travel vaccinations. Depending on the destination, length of stay, the child’s age, and existing vaccination status, we determine which vaccinations are recommended or necessary.

The necessary vaccines are ordered as needed.

We draw blood right here in our office —with sensitivity, in a child-friendly manner, and without rushing. Even if a child is anxious or unsure, we take our time, explain things in an age-appropriate way, and proceed gently.

This eliminates the need for additional trips to an external laboratory, which is a significant relief for many children and parents.

This assessment forms the basis for treatment that is tailored to the individual—not the other way around.

  • Based on the Austrian vaccination schedule
  • Clear guidance on benefits and options
  • A calm, child-friendly approach
  • Everything in one place—no need for unnecessary trips

The goal is to ensure that vaccinations and blood draws are conducted safely, with clear information provided, and as stress-free as possible.

Fitness for Sports & Performance Clearances

Medical Evaluation for Children and Adolescents Who Participate in Sports

The sports fitness certificate is used to determine, from a medical perspective, whether children and adolescents are fit to participate in sports activities. It is often a prerequisite for participating in club sports, school sports, or competitions.

Special attention is given to health, resilience, and individual circumstances.

A sports medicine evaluation is required, among other things, for:

  • for membership in sports clubs
  • for competitions or competitive sports
  • as part of school or training requirements
  • when resuming physical activity after an illness or injury
  • if there is uncertainty regarding physical capacity or pre-existing conditions

The examination is tailored to the patient's age, sport, and specific concerns, and includes, among other things:

  • Medical history (including past medical conditions, symptoms, and family history of risk factors)
  • physical examination
  • Assessment of Cardiovascular Endurance
  • Assessment of the Musculoskeletal System and Coordination
  • Advice on Physical Activity and Prevention

If necessary, further tests are recommended or conducted in coordination with other medical specialties.

The focus is not merely on issuing a certificate, but on providing a responsible medical assessment. The goal is to

  • Identifying risks early on
  • To avoid overloads
  • to enable safe participation in sports
  • Keeping Parents and Teens Well-Informed

In doing so, we take into account both recreational and competitive sports.

  • Children and Teens in Club Sports
  • young competitive athletes
  • Children who are physically active and have pre-existing conditions
  • Families who want peace of mind and medical clarity

Allergies & Desensitization

Allergy testing as the foundation of any targeted treatment

Allergic symptoms in children can manifest in a wide variety of ways—ranging from a runny nose, cough, or skin reactions to breathing difficulties or severe reactions to insect stings. Not every suspected allergy is actually an allergy, and not every confirmed sensitization automatically explains the symptoms.

For this reason, a thorough allergy evaluation is conducted before any further treatment is initiated. The goal is to correctly classify symptoms, identify relevant triggers, and avoid unnecessary or ineffective treatments.

Allergy testing is tailored to each individual and their age and, depending on the specific issue, may include, among other things:

  • A detailed medical history of the symptoms and their progression over time
  • Classification of potential triggers (e.g., pollen, house dust, animals, insects)
  • Allergy testing (e.g., skin tests, blood tests)
  • Assessment of the Clinical Relevance of Test Results

On this basis, we discuss with the parents which measures are appropriate—ranging from symptomatic treatment to possible desensitization.

Desensitization is a causal treatment method for certain allergic conditions. The goal is to gradually acclimate the immune system to the triggering substance and reduce allergic reactions over the long term.

We place great importance on:

  • careful selection of suitable patients
  • a realistic assessment of the chances of success
  • Transparent information about the process, duration, and expectations

The goal is a treatment that is medically appropriate, well-tolerated, and contributes to a better quality of life in the long term.

Desensitization may be considered, in particular, for the following types of allergies:

  • Pollen allergies (e.g., grasses, trees)
  • House Dust Mite Allergy
  • Insect venom allergies (e.g., bee, wasp)

Whether desensitization is appropriate and feasible depends on several factors, such as the child’s age, the type and severity of the allergy, and any comorbid conditions.

Before beginning desensitization, a thorough allergy evaluation is necessary. This includes:

  • detailed medical history of the symptoms
  • Allergy Diagnostics
  • Assessment of Benefits, Risks, and Alternatives

The start date and the course of treatment are determined on an individual basis and discussed in detail with the family.

Depending on the type of allergy, desensitization is performed as follows:

  • as an injection therapy (subcutaneous) or
  • as an oral or sublingual treatment (tablets or drops)

Treatment usually extends over a longer period of time and requires regular appointments as well as the family's full cooperation.

Desensitization can:
  • significantly relieve allergic symptoms
  • reduce the need for medication
  • reduce the risk of the allergy progressing

At the same time—as with any medical treatment—there are potential risks, particularly allergic reactions. For this reason, the treatment is administered under medical supervision and with clear safety precautions in place.

Become Pain-Free & Anxiety-Free Through Medical Hypnosis

Medical Hypnosis in Pediatrics

Some symptoms cannot be adequately alleviated by conventional medical treatments—especially when anxiety, stress, or inner tension play a central role.
In such cases, medical hypnosis can provide effective and gentle support.

At the Wilhelminenberg Medical Center, we use medical hypnosis specifically in pediatrics—in a way that is age-appropriate, gentle, and integrated into a thorough medical evaluation.

Medical hypnosis can be particularly helpful in the following areas:

  • Pain, such as functional abdominal pain or headaches
  • Fear of medical examinations or procedures
  • Sleep disorders
  • psychosomatic symptoms
  • inner restlessness or tension

Hypnosis does not replace medical treatment, but rather complements it in areas where the body and mind work closely together.

Medical hypnosis is a scientifically recognized method in which children learn to focus their attention in a targeted manner and to use mental images or visualizations.
This can help influence experiences of pain and anxiety, reduce stress, and strengthen self-regulation.

Children are often particularly well-suited to this type of work because they have a natural affinity for imagination and mental imagery.

Before hypnosis is used, a thorough pediatric evaluation is always conducted. Hypnosis itself:

  • is tailored to each individual's age and situation
  • takes place in a calm, sheltered atmosphere
  • is explained in a voluntary and transparent manner
  • involves parents in a supportive role, depending on the child's age

Many children find hypnosis pleasant and relaxing.

The focus is not on “hypnosis at any cost,” but rather on its meaningful and responsible use as part of a holistic approach to care.

The goal is to help children,

  • Coping Better with Pain
  • Overcoming Fears
  • Developing confidence in your own body
  • and to feel capable of taking action
